Any citizen of Ireland may apply for an Irish passport at this mission. If you are not a citizen but wish to become one, see our citizenship pages.
Can I apply online or by email for an Irish passport?
No. For security reasons you must complete a paper application form and mail it to us at PO Box 279, Auckland 1140
Can I download a passport application form from the internet?
No. Each printed application form has its own serial number. Furthermore as images are scanned from the form we need them to be on the correct paper. Therefore you must complete a physical application form and mail it to us at the address above. To obtain a form, please email us with your name and postal address.
How long does it take to process a passport application?
At the moment it takes approximately six weeks to obtain a passport, if all your documentation is correct. Applications are checked here and processed, but the passports are produced in Ireland and returned to us for forwarding to you by registered mail. For this reason it is not possible for us to guarantee delivery dates and you should allow plenty of time for your application to be processed.
How much does an Irish passport cost?
There is a scale of fees depending on the age of the holder.
Can I pay by credit card?
No
Where can I get the right passport photos?
We do not require applicants to use any particular photographer. The requirements are explained in the notes accompanying the application form. Conforming with these dimensions is vital to the production of your biometric passport.
I have lost my Irish passport- what now?
In order to obtain a replacement, you must complete a passport application form. Section 6 must be completed in respect of the loss of your current passport and this requires the loss to be reported to your nearest police station.
I need to travel urgently and have no valid passport. What can I do?
We can issue emergency passports at the Consulate. These are not the same as full passports- they have fewer pages and shorter validity. We issue them only in the case of genuine emergency travel and on sight of your travel arrangements. These emergency passports are intended primarily for travel to Ireland. If you chose to travel on an emergency passport it is your responsibility to ensure that it is acceptable for travel to the destination you are visiting.
Passport Tracker
I applied to you a while back but my application is not appearing on the online passport tracker. Is there a problem?
Not necessarily. Unfortunately your application only appears on the tracker system when it reaches Dublin (i.e. after we have completed our checks and forwarded it for production). We hope that this will be changed on a future software upgrade. In the meantime, if we have any problem processing your application, we will contact you. Otherwise, it should appear on the tracker shortly.
The tracker shows that my passport has been issued- why have I not received it?
Because of the additional security features in our biometric passports we cannot produce them here. The tracker system was designed primarily for use with applications made in Ireland, where the passports are produced. It does not differentiate between passports which are issued directly to the applicant in Ireland and those which are forwarded to missions abroad to be passed to applicants. We hope that this will be changed on a future software upgrade. In the meantime, and depending on the day of the week your passport is produced, you should allow at least a week and often longer for it to reach us and then to be forwarded to you in the pre-paid registered envelope which we asked you to provide with the application
