The tradition of Irish dance has been with us for centuries - hypnotizing rhythm, disciplined control, colourful costumes, heart-quickening music and the sheer joy of the participants. Riverdance came along less than a decade ago bringing a new and modern perspective without losing traditional integrity. Irish dancing has become popular worldwide and in New Zealand there has never been such a demand to learn the intricacies and skills of hornpipes, reels and jigs. The New Zealand Irish dancing schools are of a very high standard with professional teachers bringing their pupils up to a standard where many can compete with confidence and distinction in the annual World Championships in Ireland. Irish Dancing Schools Traditional Irish Dancing Association of NZ Bredesen School of Traditional Irish Dancers Cailin Traditional Irish Dancing School Established in 1995 Cailin Traditional Irish Dancing School offers classes for children and for adults. Connolly School of Irish Dancing Teachers of traditional Irish dancing with a membership of 75 students, this school has been operating for over 25 years. Classes in West Auckland for Ceili Teams and Performances. Copeland Academy of Irish Dance Dermot Pratt Dancers The Doyle Academy of Irish Dance Classes are held in Manurewa and Kohimarama for solos, teams and performances. Available for functions. Enrolments taken throughout the year. Fox School of Irish Dancing Gaelic School of Irish Dance Gregan School of Irish Dance Irish Dance Hawkes Bay Hawkes Bay's only Irish dancing classes, running since 2005. Classes in Hastings and Napier for children age 7 and up. Also set dancing for adults. Kay-Hallissey Irish Dancers (Auckland) Classes in Central Auckland and North Shore for solos and teams. Kay-Hallissey Irish Dancers (Christchurch) Kerry Dancers Classes are held in Mana and Plimmerton. Kildunne School of Irish Dance This school has been operating since mid 1980's and has a membership of approximately 70 students. The Kildunne School in its short history has had a New Zealand National Champion in every single age group. It has also been the school with the most points achieved at the National Feis. O'Neill School of Irish Dancing This school has been operating since 1989 and teaches and performs traditional Irish dancing and has a membership of approximately 50 students. The school has had students at the World Championships in almost every year since 1990. O Sullivan School of Irish Dance Classes held in Mt Albert Ni Ghabhann Irish Dance Academy Traditional and Modern Irish Dance Classes for Ages 4 to Adult. Check out the website for further details. The Taranaki Irish Dancers The only teachers of traditional Irish dancing in Taranaki, this school has been operating since October 2000. Classes are held Hawera, South Taranaki. Tralee Dancers This school is a traditional Irish dancing school and has approximately 20 pupils aged from 5 to 15 years. |
